The Rutoes of Mt Kumotori
There are two main routes to Mt Kumotori.
Kamozawa route
The Kamozawa route is the most accessible with the largest number of buses. It takes about five hours to reach the summit of Mount Kumotori with an elevation gain of 1,467 meters, so a day trip may be somewhat difficult. There are no hazards along the entire course, and it is well trodden even during the snowy season. On the other hand, the monotonous ascent through the forest zone continues until the Nanatsuishi Hut area, which is a tedious course.
Mitsumine route
The elevation of the trailhead of the Sanbong route is 1,040 meters, the highest of the three routes, and with an elevation difference of only 977 meters, it is the most suitable route for a day trip to Mt Kumotori. After passing the Kirimogamine rest area, the route continues with moderate ups and downs on a thin ridge line, making it a varied and enjoyable place. The traverse section, a 30-minute walk from Imonokidokke, is prone to slip-and-fall accidents due to icy road surface from November to late April. (The slope on the valley side is not too steep.) Please be sure to bring sufficient winter equipment during the snowy season.
